Bomb maker abandoned as a baby

A MAN has been sentenced to seven years in jail for setting off an explosive device that injured an American in front of a busy shopping mall in Beijing.

Lei Sen, 22, put his home-made bomb in shrubbery next to a sidewalk in front of the Sky Plaza and detonated it after he saw the American approach on October 21 last year, Dongcheng District People's Court heard.

The 30-year-old American, who studies Chinese at Beijing Language and Culture University, was slightly hurt.

Lei, a migrant worker from Sichuan Province, said he wanted to "take revenge against society" and "vent his depression" after, at the age of 14, discovering he had been abandoned as a baby.

He told the court he might appeal because he believed the sentence was "too harsh."

Lei said the court hadn't considered his mental status. Judges said they will arrange for Lei to undertake classes.

Lei's father said he adopted Lei after his sister found the baby abandoned on farmland at just a few days old.

He had been a top student and got on well with others until he accidentally found out he had been abandoned.
