Bombed couple seek compensation

A COUPLE who were severely injured on their honeymoon by a suicide bomb on a train 16 years have demanded 620,000 yuan (US$91,176) in compensation from the Railway Bureau in Chengdu and Beijing in a lawsuit.

Yi Anrong, 41, was almost blinded by the blast while her husband Chen Shuyou, 39, is half blind and totally deaf. "We don't know how and why the blast happened up to now," Yi was quoted as saying by Chongqing Evening News today.

The couple took the train from Chongqing to Beijing for their honeymoon in 1993. The blast happened while they were asleep in the early morning of November 28, Chongqing Railway People's Court heard yesterday.

When Yi became conscious, she was in a hospital awaiting eye surgery and the couple was sent back to their hometown in Dianjiang County of Chongqing Municipality the next year, the report said.

Beijing Railway Bureau's representative told the court that the blast was caused by a suicide bomber who carried dynamite and an electric detonator. The bomber and a 60-year-old passenger died at the scene.

Yi's disabilities are classed as Grade I, the most severe of 10 grades, while Chen has been assessed as Grade 2.

They lost almost all working ability after the blast and lived by the support of Chen's elderly parents and relatives. They had two sons.

However the defendants showed the court a compensation agreement for 40,000 yuan the couple had signed in 1994 and which agreed to no further demands.

The couple told the court they were forced to sign the agreement under duress.
