Bomber also victim, not aware of what he carried

YUNNAN police yesterday apologized to family members of a suspected suicide bomber who died along with three others in an office blast on May 10 after the man was shown to have been hired by others to carry a backpack bomb into the office.

Zhao Dengyong, 26, was unaware he was about to become a human bomb when he was paid 100 yuan (US$16) by two villagers to enter a township government building in Qiaojia County. The two villagers used a mobile phone to detonate the bomb in the backpack, according to Yunnan Public Security Bureau.

The villagers, Deng Deyong and Song Chaoyu, have been arrested and confessed the crime, officials said.

"Our investigation showed that Zhao never had any role in the conspiracy and died on the scene. He is a victim in the case himself," police told Xinhua news agency.

Police said that the two villagers, both 43 and from the same village, were unsatisfied with a relocation deal offered by the town.

Deng allegedly made a remote-controlled bomb on May 9. He and Song hired Zhao from a labor market the next day and sent him into the office.

Zhao's family had said that Zhao was a scapegoat in the bomb attack that also injured 14 others because he had never touched explosives nor did he have access to them.

Police initially published Zhao's diary and online chat logs, and insisted Zhao had a hatred for society.

"We apologize to the public, Zhao Dengyong and his family for the inaccurate and misleading information we earlier released," police said.
