Bomber says he accidentally set off Beijing airport blast
A WHEELCHAIR-BOUND man who set off a homemade bomb at Beijing’s airport was so nervous that he accidentally detonated the explosive device when police approached, his lawyer, Li Fangping, said today.
Ji Zhongxing, 34, said he made the bomb with gunpowder from firecrackers.
Ji lost his left arm and an officer who approached him sustained minor injuries in the blast at Beijing Capital International Airport on June 20.
Ji said he felt very sorry for injuring the officer, another lawyer, Liu Xiaoyuan, said. Witnesses reported that Ji told them to run away before the explosion.
Ji has been arrested and remains in custody, offcials said.
Ji had written on his blog that he was paralyzed when police assaulted him in Dongguan in south China’s Guangdong Province in June 2005. He said his claims for compensation and demands that his attackers be punished had been rejected over the past eight years.
