Bomber’s appeal fails
A COURT in south China’s Guangdong Province yesterday upheld the life sentence on a man who sent a home-made bomb to another man and caused him to lose his sight.
Zheng Mingdong, 37, made the bomb out of revenge after his girlfriend broke up with him. Zheng believed the victim, surnamed Li, had caused the breakup after he had an affair with his girlfriend.
Zheng put the explosives in a package and gave it to a delivery company in Guangzhou, Guangdong’s capital, saying the parcel contained French perfume.
The parcel was sent to Li’s home as “a gift from a 4S shop” in February last year. Li’s face, head, hands, chest and abdomen were badly injured when the package exploded.
Zheng was caught by police two days later.
In May, the Guangzhou Intermediate People’s Court sentenced Zheng to life, and ordered him to pay around 800,000 yuan (US$129,032) to Li, while the delivery company was also ordered to pay Li about 340,000 yuan for failing to check the parcel.
Zheng and the company filed an appeal to the Higher People’s Court of Guangdong Province but it dismissed the appeal yesterday.
