Bone complications a menace to cancer patients
THERE are about 2.7 million new cancer cases in the world every year and 20 percent of them are in China. With advanced technology and equipment, cancer patients can live much longer, said a doctor at the Shanghai Chest Hospital.
"One third of cancer patients will develop bone-related complications such as fracture, pain and paralysis. If not treated properly, their survival time can be shortened to just one month," said Dr Zhou Caicun.
"If bone-related complications are well under control, it is possible for cancer patients to live for four to eight years," Zhou said.
Seventeen provinces in China have included medications for cancer patients' bone-related complications in their medical insurance system.
