Book reveals possible bribes
SEVERAL high-ranking land planning authority officials in Shanxi Province were being investigated for economic violations after a notebook, which has been seized by prosecutors, surfaced detailing the amount of bribes each official had accepted.
An unnamed middleman who helped real estate developers obtain approvals from the Taiyuan Urban Planning Bureau in Shanxi recorded the bribes offered to officials and their names in the notebook.
Shanxi People's Procuratorate started to investigate because of the information contained in the notebook, a prosecutor confirmed, The Beijing News reported yesterday.
Many real estate developers used the middleman, who had close connections to the urban planning bureau, to get approval for projects. The middleman charged 2 million yuan (US$307,050) for each deal, said an unidentified insider.
More than 60 government officials were identified in the notebook, the report said.
Wang Fengling, deputy director of the urban planning bureau, Jin Xiaohui, former deputy director and Li Chenyi, also a former deputy director, were now being investigated, the provincial procuratorate confirmed on April 16, according to the report.
