Bootleg guns trade brisk in poor rural area
THE lucrative but deadly illegal trade in weapons has lured some villegers to make bootleg guns. And at some places, the illegal business involves the whole county.
The illegal guns made by villegers were said as good as army ones. Those illegal guns can be highly powerful in near range shootings, said a police officer in Hunan Province where police seized 558 illegal gun makers and sellers last year, Beijing News reported today.
It only cost less than 200 yuan to make a gun, which would be sold at thousands. The huge profit lured farmers into the unlawful business, the report said.
In Hunan, police broke a case exposing two major illegal gun production mills in Hualong County in Qinghai Province and Songtao County in Guizhou Province. Both counties were poverty stricken. Making illegal guns was the villagers' access to quick cash.
Guns made in Hualong is well known on the black market and one gun can sell for 10,000 yuan.
Villagers in Songtao started the illegal business since the 1980s. Local police have busted several gun selling rings from 1992 to 1996 and seized a total of 8,772 illegal guns and 18 cannons.
