Boss fired for driver blocking ambulance

A TOBACCO chief was fired yesterday after his driver parked in front of a hospital gate, delaying an ambulance carrying an patient who subsequently required amputations.

The driver, surnamed Shan, drove a vehicle belonging to the Huizhou District branch of the Huangshan City Tobacco Monopoly Administration to the Huangshan People’s Hospital, in eastern province Anhui, on Monday morning.

Although told the hospital parking lot was full, he still tried to drive in.

When refused admittance, Shan parked the car in front of the hospital gate, local news portal, www.ahwang.cn reported.

Witnesses said he left the car, locked the doors and entered the hospital.

Around 15 minutes later, two ambulances carrying two men who had been seriously injured in a landslide arrived, the People’s Daily website reported.

However, they couldn’t get into the hospital as the car was blocking the entrance and Shan couldn’t be found.

Road to survival

More than 10 minutes later, Shan emerged from the hospital and police ordered him to move the vehicle, the report said.

“There are people here waiting for someone to save their lives and you’re blocking the road to survival,” a bystander told Shan.

The head of the Huizhou tobacco administration, surnamed Hu, denied claims that Shan had been dispatched on private business.

“He went to see the dentist after he had been sent on official duties to buy desks. We have disciplined him over this,” Hu said.

However, Shan told police that he was driving someone — who was not identified — to see a doctor, it was reported.

One of the two patients caught up in the delay, whose arms and legs had been seriously injured, subsequently underwent amputation surgery.

A doctor said the time lost moving the car may have proved crucial.

“For the patient, time was precious and he may have been dragged into a dangerous condition,” the medic, surnamed Lin, said.

Hu has been removed from his post and Shan suspended.
