Boss held after fire at gelatin plant in Hebei

THE head of a gelatin plant in north China's Hebei Province has been detained after allegedly setting fire to his plant to destroy evidence amid an unfolding scandal involving the manufacture of contaminated medicine capsules.

Song Xunjie, manager of the Hebei Xueyang Glair Gelatin Factory, located in Fucheng County, allegedly set fire to the plant at 3:20pm Sunday and was detained on Monday, said a statement issued by the county government early yesterday.

An initial investigation showed that Song set the fire while trying to destroy evidence indicating that the plant provided industrial gelatin to capsule-production companies.

So far, only two drug companies involved in the scandal have recalled chromium-contaminated medicines, while the remaining seven either insisted their medicines are qualified or remained silent.

None of the nine pharmaceutical companies whose 13 medicines used capsules containing industrial gelatin has made a public apology.

Dandong Tongyuan Pharmaceutical Co Ltd in Liaoning Province and Tonghua Yason Pharmaceuticals Co in Jilin Province said they were recalling the products.

Xiuzheng Pharmaceutical Group in Jilin Province said it had stopped sales of one cold medicine on the blacklist and is doing more testing. The statement said its capsule is from a licensed company but it did not release the supplier's name.

China News Agency yesterday quoted Xiu Laigui, Xiuzheng's board director, as saying the company's check didn't find excessive chromium in any of its products but it will send samples for third-party testing.

Websites of some drug firms, including Xiuzheng and Gela Dandong Pharmaceutical Co. in Qinghai Province, were hacked repeatedly. Hackers left messages on the sites' home pages with messages such as, "Were my broken shoes used by you to make capsules?"

By yesterday, 23 suspects allegedly involved in the sales or production of the contaminated capsules had been detained by Xinchang County police in Zhejiang Province.

Zhuokang Capsule Co Ltd and Huaxing Capsule Plant in Xinchang were exposed to have produced capsules with industrial gelatin, which contains much higher levels of chromium than edible gelatin.

So far, the Xinchang County government has shut down 57 production lines, 12 raw material warehouses and 14 product warehouses linked to the scandal.
