Bottled water contaminated

AN excessive amount of a chemical that could cause cancer has been detected in six types of bottled water.

An elevated level of bromate was found in bottled water produced by Harbin Pharmaceutical, based in Heilongjiang Province, Jingyou Honghu Mineral Products, based in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, and four other producers, according to a spot check conducted by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, Xinhua news agency reported yesterday.

Bromate is a byproduct of the sterilization process.

Xinhua claimed Jingyou admitted that early this year a well from which it sources water collapsed and the water turned red but the company did not change its water source in order to save money.

Industry experts said it is difficult for companies to test their water and cost deters them from sending samples for laboratory testing.

Eighteen types of bottled or barreled water failed to meet quality standards in the tests conducted by the administration, which discovered high levels of bacteria, free chlorine and strontium.

A total of 220 bottled and barreled water types from 211 companies from Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei Province were tested in the spot check.
