Box office boom to top 10m yuan

CHINA'S box office earnings is expected to hit 10 billion yuan (US$ 1.47 billion) this year with the first half-year figure surging by 80 percent to 4.6 million yuan from 2.55 billion last year.

Imported films grabbed 59 percent share of the box office, led by the 3D epic "Avatar" with a record 1.35 billion yuan gross from January, reported Shanghai Evening Post today.

The No.2 hit was Tim Burton's fantasy blockbuster "Alice in Wonderland", with 223.8 million, followed by "Iron Man 2" with 171 million yuan. "Clash of the Titans" and "Prince of Persia" also created headlines for making 150 million yuan.

Chinese films gained 41 percent share with 1.8 billion yuan. The martial art legend "Ip Man 2: Legend of the Grandmaster " topped the list with 220 million yuan.

However, more Chinese films will hit the screen in the second half of the year, including Feng Xiaogang's "Aftershock" based on the 1976 Tangshan earthquake, and "Orphan of Zhao" by Chen Kaige, the film version of an old Yuan Dynasty tragedy.
