Boy, 8, living in isolated mountain home, stops talking
AN eight year boy who lives only with his grandmother in the lonely mountains of Sichuan Province stopped talking and only emits strange laughter in front of strangers, Deyang Evening News reported.
The boy dropped out of school due to poverty and lives with his grandmother and a puppy inside a walnut forest on a mountain in Zhongjian County. A lack of contact with the outside world left the boy scared of the strangers.
"He ran away when I first came to see him”, said a volunteer who goes to the mountains to help care for the child and his grandma monthly.
The boy's father died after falling from the roof since the family had no money for treatment and the mother left never to come back. The grandmother applied for a basic living allowance and picks up waste on the street to survive.
"We don’t have electricity or water here,” the grandmother said, according to the report. “We go to sleep when the sky turns dark.” The grandma also told reporters that they only have one or two meals a day with salty porridge since they do not have enough food.
Volunteers and other relatives bring rice up to the mountain every one or two months.
Most of the time the boy sits quietly on the threshold and watches the sky.
