Boy almost killed by bullies can wink, sit up

A boy who suffered multiple organ failure after his intestines were punctured by compressed air from a pump nozzle forcibly inserted into his anus by two bullies has left the intensive care unit.

Doctors in Beijing Bayi Children's Hospital said Du Chuanwang, 13, developed severe skin necrosis and jaundice. They said they would continue to clean up his necrotic wounds, strengthen the function of his injured organs and perform plastic surgery.

Doctors also said Du's spirits were better. The boy was able to wink at others and sit for a while, but he was barely able to speak and was being fed intravenously. He will receive psychological counseling today, according to the Angel Mom Foundation, a subsidiary of the China Children's Charity Aid Foundation.

Nearly 16,000 yuan (US$2,508) of a total 650,000 donation has been spent to cover his medical bills in Beijing, the foundation said. Offers have come in to pay for schooling for Du, so he would not have to return to his apprentice job in an auto repair shop in Dezhou, a city in eastern Shandong Province.

Besides paying for treatment, the donation will also be used to help the boy recover for up to six months after he leaves the hospital, and anything left over will go to other ill children from destitute families, the foundation said.

"I would never send him to work if I had known" what would happen, said Du's father, Du Shehou. He and his brother accompanied the boy from Xiajin County to Beijing on Thursday.

The boy was attacked by two older workers on June 30. He woke up after being in a coma for eight days, the foundation said.

His intestines were punctured in more than 20 places and pictures showed that the pressure that shot through his body was so great he sustained severe damage to his nasal bone and mouth, including loss of teeth and exposure of bones.

"He almost blew up by bearing the high atmospheric pressure equaling to that of four tires of a small sedan," a foundation member wrote on the Internet, adding that his body "sizzled" as doctors sucked the air out.

Police have arrested the two workers, Chen Gengchun, 20, and Zhao Xinwei, 27, for intentional injury. The pair, who said they had intended the attack as a prank, felt deep regret, local media reported.

They said they had no more money after paying the family 100,000 yuan.

Du dropped out of school early this year and became an apprentice in the auto repair shop to help his father, a farmer. His mother died years ago.
