Boy arrested over grandpa's death

TAIWAN police have arrested a 13-year-old boy who allegedly stabbed his grandfather to death after he refused to give the teenager money during Chinese New Year.

Police said they caught the suspect surnamed Hsieh when he drove on an expressway to escape, United Daily News reported yesterday. According to the boy, he was disappointed when his grandfather showed no intention of giving him a red envelope when he went to spend the New Year holiday with him in Changhua County on Tuesday.

The teen said his anger intensified when his grandfather declined to give him 1,000 New Taiwan dollars (US$33) to buy a phone card. He allegedly took a fruit knife and stabbed the man at least 20 times until he died.

The suspect then fled in his grandfather's car. The car broke down and police caught him when he tried to sell the vehicle for NT$2,000 to passing drivers.

Upon his arrest, the boy said his grandfather deserved to die as the man had favored the teen's younger sisters and brothers, according to the report.

The boy's parents divorced when he was three years old.
