Boy in critical condition after principal beats him, report says

An 11-year-old boy in an elementary school in Gansu Province is in a critical condition after being beaten up by the school’s principal last week, Lanzhou Morning Post reported.

The boy, surnamed Ma, is a fifth-grade student at Baxia Elementary School in Taishi Town of Lintao County in Dingxi City, the report said. The boy returned home from school, assisted by a classmate, last Thursday and told his father he had a stomachache.

The boy’s grandfather heard from Ma’s classmates that the boy had been beaten up by the principal, which was confirmed by the principal himself when family members went to the school for an explanation, the report said. The boy was rushed to a hospital and diagnosed with a bleeding spleen. He had surgery that night. After running a high fever for two straight days, Ma was transferred to the hospital’s intensive care unit on Saturday.

The principal, surnamed Wei, asked Ma to raise his head while doing some work. Ma didn’t do so and Wei hit him on the left side of his back, the report cited one of Ma’s classmates as saying.

Ma’s family had raised 50,000 yuan (US$8,065) for his treatment, but it was stolen at the hospital, the report added.

Wei gave Ma’s family 5,500 yuan yesterday, according to the report. However, the family was still struggling to pay medical fees of 2,000 yuan per day.

The newspaper said both the police and the county’s education bureau are investigating the case.
