Boy says teacher, class beat him
A 14-year-old student in Jiangsu Province was allegedly beaten twice by a teacher and then slapped one-by-one by his peers, simply because he called the teacher by her name, Modern Express reported yesterday.
The family of Zhang Xiao-xin, a student in Class 15 in Zhengliangmei Middle School in Lianshui County, has reported the incident to the police and the teacher, surnamed Fan, who teaches Class 22, has been suspended, the report said.
Zhang didn't address the instructor as "teacher Fan," as is customary in Chinese schools. Apparently, Fan believed Zhang was being disrespectful, said the report.
The school said it was investigating and that no conclusion had been reached.
Zhang does not want to return to school as he has been traumatised by the event, which took place on December 17. That a teacher could act in such a way has profoundly shocked him.
Zhang's parents told the newspaper that Fan, a 32-year-old English teacher, beat their son three times - the first time outside his classroom and the second time in Fan's office. Afterwards, Fan ordered all of her 65 students to slap Zhang on the face.
Some of Fan's students told the newspaper that she threatened to hit them if they refused to slap Zhang.
Sun Bing, Fan's supervisor, told the newspaper that corporal punishment is forbidden at the school.
"We have regulations that forbid teachers from physically punishing students," Sun said. "Fan admitted that she took drastic action, but we still need to investigate whether it happened the way Zhang and his family have described."
