Boy who got hepatitis B in womb dies of liver cancer
A SIX-YEAR-OLD boy born with hepatitis B after his mother refused to acknowledge her infection and take preventative measures died of liver cancer last week in Fujian Province, the Fujian Southeastern Net website reported today.
Doctors said the death likely could have been prevented.
If necessary precautions are taken during pregnancy, the hepatitis B virus can be prevented from infecting a fetus, said Chen Yanling, vice president of Fujian Union Hospital.
Doctors at the hospital said the boy was the youngest that they knew of in the province to be infected with the virus and to die as a result. They said he was exposed through his mother, who did not show any symptoms to alert any family members or medical professionals during pregnancy.
The report said the mother didn't want to acknowledge her infection to her husband and his family because she didn't want to be discriminated against.
Many Chinese people carrying hepatitis B virus keep it a secret to avoid discrimination. Some employers won't hire hepatitis B carriers. Hepatitis is a major health concern in China.
Chen advised men over 35 years old and women over 45 years old to be tested and have their livers examined at least once a year.
