'Brad and Angelina' of HK announce divorce
HONG KONG movie superstar couple Nicolas Tse and Cecilia Cheung yesterday officially announced in a joint statement that they have decided to divorce.
It's the first time the couple - comparable to Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in terms of their huge fanbase and influence on the entertainment industry - admitted a divorce is under way, after months of rumors.
Cheung was one of the actresses involved in the 2008 Edison Chen photo scandal. Explicit photographs featuring Chen with a number of actresses were leaked online.
Cheung was already married to Tse and had just given birth to their first son.
That crisis, however, did not break their marriage but character issues did, according to the couple.
They said yesterday "personality conflicts" caused their marriage to founder.
"In a peaceful way, we have reached agreement regarding a divorce," they said.
They added that media reports in recent months on their divorce arrangements "were untrue."
The couple warned the media to stop drawing assumptions and said they reserved the right to file lawsuits.
As a divorce seemed inevitable, the media had been reporting how the couple would split their properties, citing so-called "reliable sources."
Some depicted Cheung as greedy and too emotional.
"We will share custody of our two children. And all future plans will prioritize them to ensure they grow up happily," the couple said.
They also appealed to the public and media to give them enough space to allow their children to grow up in peace.
There would be no future media responses regarding the divorce, the couple said.
The media letter was dated last Friday but released to the public by their agents yesterday afternoon.
The couple have two sons, four-year-old Lucas and 15-month-old Quintus.
Both stars are multi-millionaires, in terms of real estate and their earning abilities.
Cheung re-launched her movie career shortly before rumors about her marriage being in trouble started to spread this June.
It has been speculated that the final straw for the marriage was a report that Cheung took photographs with Edison Chen after bumping into him on a plane. Chen confirmed this happened, but Cheung remained silent.
