Brain-injured patient expelled by mistake

A man injured in a road accident in central Hunan Province was driven out of a hospital as security guards mistook him for a troublemaker, the Hunan Morning News reported today.

Xie Tongjun, a teacher with the Dapingtang Middle School in Yongzhou City, was hit by an automobile on November 15 and was found in a coma in a roadside field three days later.

Xie was sent to the Xintian County Central Hospital where doctors found he suffered from brain injury and could not speak. Since he had no identification card with him, the doctors left him in the emergency department after treating his wounds.

Xie lost sanity because of his brain injury and would climb onto other people's beds and pee anywhere he wanted, drawing complains from other patients in the room.

On November 22, while the emergency department doctors were changing shifts, hospital guards drove Xie out, thinking he was just a visitor with some mental problem.

Xie was later found by his family outside the hospital and was transferred to another hospital.

Liu Yufang, director of the Xintian County Health Bureau, said the Xintian County Central Hospital should take full responsibility for the incident and pay Xie's medical costs. The guards should be punished as well.
