Brand of instant noodles too acidic, says watchdog

JINMAILANG instant noodles have been found to be too acidic, which could cause vomiting and diarrhea and liver damage in severe cases, according to the industrial and commercial watchdog in central Henan Province.

The Jinmailang Food Ltd Co might have purchased inferior oil with high levels of acid to cut costs or fried the noodles with old oil for a long time, both of which lead to excessive acidity, industry insiders told news portal www.china.com.cn.

Several batches of the company's products are said to be involved, including its Konno Ramen and Yiyuanwang spicy beef flavored noodles.

Fans of the company's products went online to express their dismay at the news.

One consumer who said he was a regular buyer of Jinmailang noodles wrote on Weibo.com: "I am eating its instant noodle. I'd rather cook noodles by myself next time."

There were also online calls for a boycott of Jinmailang products.

In 2008, Jinmailang's factory in Chengdu, capital of southwestern Sichuan Province, shut down six of its production lines after the provincial authority found it discharged major pollutants and caused noise pollution.

So far, the company has made no response to the Henan watchdog's claims.
