Breathing new life into Guizhou tourism

THE Tourism Administration of Guizhou Province has officially launched a program to produce “canned air” as its special tourist commodity and is soliciting creative ideas from around the world, China News Service reported yesterday.

The launch came just weeks after Chinese President Xi Jinping made the same suggestion when he took part in a panel discussion with Guizhou delegates during the annual Chinese People’s Congress session this month in Beijing.

When a Guizhou lawmaker told Xi the density of PM2.5 in the province averaged less than 50 micrograms per cubic meter, Xi responded that air quality was linked directly to people’s happiness and joked that the air in Guizhou could be made into a “can of air” in the future.

Fu Yingchun, head of the Guizhou Tourism Administration, said at a press conference that he was confident the “canned air” program will be “very feasible.”

He mentioned that Japan has been selling cans containing fresh local air as tourist souvenirs in its Mount Fuji area.

Fu plans to extend the program from canned fresh air into holiday resorts and the health industry, as well as a carbon emission trading business.

Besides soliciting ideas from outside, a research team will also be established to produce its first batch of products before June 20.

Fu also said the first choice for air source would be Fanjing Mountain, one of Guizhou’s best ecological tourism scenic spots.

But Guizhou’s efforts were met with cynicism online.

One microblogger asked, “What? Even air’s to be sold? Does it means we’ll have to pay for breathing in the future?”

“It’s disgusting. The government should solve the haze problem instead of playing tricks like this,” another wrote.

Guizhou officials are not the first Chinese to attempt to commercialize fresh air since pollution become an issue most concerning the public.

Multimillionaire Chen Guangbiao handed out cans of air on the streets of smog-hit Bejing last year, as part of an environmental campaign.
