Breeders: No, crabs aren't on pill
HAIRY crab breeders denied feeding birth control pills to the legendary crustaceans to speed up their growth so as to serve as seasonal gourmet food earlier in the upcoming autumn.
A breeders' association at the delicacy's origin Yangcheng Lake in Jiangsu Province told Beijing Morning Post on Sunday that the idea was impossible, though the story was widely repeated online.
Yang Huilong, the association chairman, said birth control pills or hormonal drugs would seriously threaten crabs' growth.
"Fewer breeders dared to take the risks," he added.
Yang and aquatic foods distributors in Beijing said it was an old rumor that circulated every year ahead of the crab season. They also added that Yangcheng Lake was an area of thousands of hectares and hardly could those breeders feed crabs with the way the rumor suggested.
