Bribery case against Beijing director begins
A FORMER director of a state-owned assets management authority and his wife in Beijing have been charged with allegedly taking bribes of over 8.77 million yuan (US$1.31 million).
The second branch of Beijing Municipal People's Procuratorate charged Qiu Chunli, former director of Beijing Tongzhou District's state-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission, and his wife, Zhao Xiangmei, with allegedly taking 24 bribes between 1994 and 2008, Legal Daily reported yesterday.
They also took two apartments, a car worth over 300,000 yuan and a 16,000-yuan luxury bicycle, the report said.
Qiu took most of the bribes from real estate developers. He bought an apartment at an apparently lower-than-market price and made 767,859 yuan after selling it.
Qiu was arrested on July 29 and his wife was caught two days later. The prosecutors decided to press charges against them after finding they had allegedly provided benefits and services for others in exchange for money on several occasions.
Gao Zhenli, former general manager of Beijing Zetong Water Treatment, is said to have given Qiu 290,000 yuan from 2005-2008 to ensure he could buy the total assets of the company when it was turned into a limited company.
The case against all the parties opened in September.
