Bribery probe nets Alibaba employees
Alibaba Group Holdings Ltd, China's largest e-commerce company, yesterday said police have arrested some of its employees and external shop owners following an anti-corruption investigation.
Nine online shops at Taobao.com were shut down and some of the shop owners face bribery charges, Alibaba said in a statement. It added that some shop owners have been released on bail.
Alibaba said that it will step up efforts to stop any online vendors involved in "improper" business dealings and that it will not tolerate improper activities that harm fair market competition.
Guangzhou-based IT Time Weekly said in a cover story in late April that some Taobao service staff members have taken bribes from online shop owners and secretly helped them cheat customers by removing negative comments. The removal of such comments boosted these online vendors' credit ratings. The report claimed such corruption extended to employees such as project planners and technical staff.
Alibaba reiterated that transparency and integrity are crucial to the survival of the company and online shop owners.
It said it will shut down online shops and report to the police whenever it finds out about anyone seeking illegal profit.
Taobao, which includes the B2C site Tmall and the individual vendor platform Taobao Marketplace, had more than half of China's online retail market last year.
