Bribes said to buy seat
A FORMER official in south China's Guangdong Province is on trial for allegedly taking 370,000 yuan (US$54,200) in bribes from one of the province's richest men to help him become a national lawmaker.
Yang Chengyong, 60, former vice director of the election committee of Guangdong People's Congress, faced the trial at Guangzhou Intermediate People's Court yesterday, Guangzhou Daily reported yesterday.
Yang was accused of taking 370,000 yuan from Zhu Siyi, general manager of Shaoguan City's Yida Gas Development Co Ltd, on 12 occasions from 2005 to 2008. In return, he helped Zhu, dubbed the richest man in north Guangdong, get elected as a deputy to Chinese National People's Congress in 2008.
Yang denied the bribery-taking accusations at court, only admitting he had taken 80,000 yuan on three occasions for consulting service for Zhu to win the election of NPC deputy. He described the money as Zhu's "investment for friendship."
