Brick worker improves after treatment

A BRICK worker who made headlines for having surgery to prove he had an occupational disease has improved after hospital treatment to flush his lungs.

Zhang Haichao, 28, was discharged yesterday from the Beidaihe Rehabilitation Center for Chinese Mine Workers in Qinhuangdao City, Hebei Province, where he had taken the treatment, People.com.cn reported today.

The treatment is a success, with Zhang saying he can now breathe easier and more deeply.

Zhang, from Henan Province, had battled for compensation for two years after contracting pneumoconiosis, a debilitating lung disease, from working at a factory producing bricks and fireproof materials.

The factory rejected his demand for compensation because a check by the local occupational disease authority denied he had developed the disease.

Zhang had surgery proving he had the condition in June.

As a result of the case, six local health officials and doctors were either sacked or suspended.
