Bridge collapse leaves 1 dead, 4 injured

ONE woman was killed and four others injured after a bridge over a river collapsed early this morning in Tieli City of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, the local government said.

The four injured are in a stable condition.

Eighteen people were pulled from the water, Xinmin.cn reported.

Eight trucks - seven freight trucks and a minivan - have been winched from the water.

A preliminary investigation found that an overloaded truck resulted in the collapse of a 120-meter section of the 187.7-meter-long bridge at 2.34am, according to Li Qingsheng, Tieli's vice mayor.

The vehicles immediately following the overloaded truck plunged into the 2-meter-deep Hulan River.

Continuous rainfall was also blamed for the collapse of the bridge which was built in 1973, according to the vice mayor.

More than 400 firefighters, police, soldiers and medical staff helped in the rescue.
