Bridge over Qiantang River collapses, driver injured

A BRIDGE over Qiantang River of Hangzhou, eastern Zhejiang Province collapsed at around 2am today, injuring at least a driver.

A section of bridge approach, more than 10 meters long and over one meters wide, collapsed, leaving a huge hole on Xixing Bridge over the Qiantang River, Xinhua news agency reported, citing local police.

A driver was injured during the accident and has been sent to hospital, Xinhua said, adding investigation into the cause is in underway. The bridge has been closed to traffic and there are no immediate reports on other causalities.

China Central Television reported earlier that at least 50 square meters of deck on Xixing Bridge suddenly crumbled and a heavy semi-trailer fell off five minutes later, damaging some of the bridge's fences.

Xixing Bridge, also known as the Qiantang River No.3 Bridge, connects the old town of Hangzhou with Bingjiang and Xiaoshan districts. It is also situated on one of the major roads extending to the Xiaoshan International Airport.
