Broke gambler gets death for slaying neighbors' children
A man, who killed two children of his neighbors out of envy as he had lost everything in online gambling, was sentenced to death by the Beijing No. 1 Intermediate People's Court yesterday.
Wen Quan, 44, was also fined 1.42 million yuan (US$224,644) as compensation to the two victim families.
"Don't appeal for me. I hope they (victim families) can start a new life," Wen told his lawyer after hearing the verdict.
The killer told the court that he lost about 2 million yuan in online gambling last year and grew jealous of others' happy life. Last May he invited his neighbors to send their boys to a family party he held for his son, today's Beijing Morning Post reported.
He stifled one boy in a underground garage and brought the other boy and his son to a hotel where he fed them orange juice mixed with sleeping pills. He killed the boy first and planned to kill his son and himself later, but finally gave up.
That afternoon his wife received a short message: "I killed two boys but spared our son as it would be too gruel to you. Report to the police now. It won't implicate you. Goodbye."
