‘Brother Watch’ laments his fall into abyss of crime

A FORMER work safety chief in northwest China, dubbed “Brother Watch” because of his taste for expensive timepieces, was yesterday sentenced to 14 years in jail for corruption.

Yang Dacai, former head of Shaanxi Province work safety administration, said he lamented his fall into the “abyss of crime.”

The official first came under scrutiny from Chinese Internet users after he was pictured grinning while assessing the wreckage of a road accident which left 36 people dead last year.

Yang then aroused online suspicion after images of him wearing luxury brand watches were uncovered and circulated.

At Xi’an Intermediate People’s Court he was found guilty of taking bribes and holding a large amount of property which he could not account for.

The court ordered the confiscation of the 250,000 yuan (US$40,500) in bribes and more than 5 million yuan of property that Yang failed to explain. He was also fined 50,000 yuan.

Yang was contrite in court.

“I worked for several decades, before finally taking the road to crime,” he told the court.

“It is useless to repent after falling into the abyss of crime, but I sincerely want to confess and regret the crime I committed, and beg the court to give me a new start in life,” he added.

In a hearing last Friday, Yang was accused of taking the 250,000 yuan to help a technology appraisal company upgrade its security assessment credentials.

The prosecution also argued that Yang’s family deposits far exceeded his income.

He pleaded guilty to the two charges last Friday.
