‘Brother Watch’ on trial
A FORMER work safety official in the northwestern province of Shaanxi who gained notoriety when photographed smiling at the scene of a fatal bus crash goes on trial for corruption on Friday.
The Xi’an Intermediate People’s Court said yesterday that Yang Dacai, former head of the provincial work safety administration, is accused of taking huge bribes and having large amounts of money from unknown sources.
He was nicknamed “Brother Watch” by web users who noticed in photographs that he wore expensive watches.
Unconfirmed reports say Party disciplinary investigators found 9 million yuan (US$1.47 million) in Yang’s bank accounts and seized another 7 million yuan in cash.
Yang was widely condemned online when photographed with a broad smile while surveying a road accident that left 36 people dead last August.
Delving into his background, web users noted his range of luxury watches. Yang insisted that he bought these with his salary.
Yang was sacked last September. He engaged in disciplinary violations and is suspected of crimes, said Shaanxi provincial disciplinary authorities.
