Brothers face court over panda killing

Two brothers detained in May accused of killing a giant panda in southwest China鈥檚 Yunnan Province have been referred to prosecutors, according to a China Central Television report.
Also facing prosecution will be the man alleged to bought meat and paws from them, CCTV said.
Wang Wenlin and Wang Wencai were hunting for a wild animal suspected of killing sheep on their farm last December when the alleged offense occurred, CCTV said.
According to its report, they said they didn鈥檛 realize it was a panda when they shot it in a tree.
Prosecutors claim the brothers carried the body home and ate some of the meat before selling the rest to Li Kequan, the Chuncheng Evening News reported.
CCTV said the brothers charged Li around 4,800 yuan (US$752.16) for 35 kilograms of meat and four paws.
DNA tests revealed the remains to be from a female giant panda.
Pandas have not been spotted in Yunnan for centuries but, after the killing, the provincial forestry administration concluded there may be more than one panda in the area.
Giant pandas are among the world鈥檚 most endangered species. About 1,600 live in the wild, mostly in Sichuan and Shaanxi provinces, while more than 300 live in captivity.
