Brothers kill co-worker at Foxconn, report says
TWO workers for Foxconn, the world's largest electronics contractor, stabbed their colleague to death in the company's Shenzhen complex after a fight over a company newspaper, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.
On August 15, the victim, Wang Haoqin, was reading the company's newspaper in the rest area of the workshop. His colleague Wang Guang asked him for the paper but was refused. Wang Guang kicked Wang Haoqin and then the two fought until other workers parted them, said the newspaper.
Two days later, Wang Guang and his brother Wang Huai, who was also a worker at the company, wanted to take revenge. When Wang Haoqin was playing billiards, the two asked him for 500 yuan (US$77) but Wang Haoqin refused. The brothers stabbed him for four times and fled.
Wang Haoqin died early the next morning. The brothers were soon caught.
Last year, the Taiwan-based Foxconn aroused nationwide concern as more than 10 employees committed suicide.
As a key manufacturer of Apple's iPhones and iPads and computer gadgets for other global tech giants such as Hewlett-Packard and Dell, Foxconn raised workers' wages, improved working conditions and reduced overtime hours after it came under fire due to the spate of suicides.
Some employees accused the factory of treating them like nonpersons, according to previous reports.
