Builder wants queen for his castle

A 75-YEAR-OLD man in Chongqing Municipality is building a dream castle by himself so that he could give it to his wife, who separated from him 10 years ago, as a birthday present and win her back.

After living alone in his shabby cottage for 10 years, Luo Runqi began building the dream castle in December, the Chongqing Evening News reported yesterday.

Luo's dream has already taken shape. Villagers laughed at the building's grotesque form, but Luo said it was a European style. He had no design drawing at all - just his imagination.

There were fireplaces and wine cabinets just as in a European house. The path in the yard was like a labyrinth - the better to stop thieves, he said. The staircase was specially designed to make sweeping easier.

Luo wakes up at 5am every day and starts to work on the house the first thing after breakfast. The castle is about one-third completed.

"I calculated and there would be 40,000 bricks to be laid, I can do about 400 bricks every day, so the outer structure will take about 100 days," Luo said. "I will give it to my wife as her 70th birthday gift."
