Builders get jail terms for jeopardizing nearby homes
TWO construction contractors in southwest China were sentenced yesterday to one year in jail after they illegally dug a foundation pit for a new building, causing extensive cracks in three residential buildings and affecting 112 homes.
Hu Houyuan and Xiao Fahu, employees of Chongqing Yunfa Real Estate Development Co, started the construction last April without a legal permit and geological survey, subsequently damaging the foundation for three nearby buildings in Yong'an Town, Chongqing Municipality,today's Chongqing Morning Post reported.
Liu Xiangxing, the town's former chief, has also been detained for taking bribes from Hu and Xiao to help them bypass the Construction Law.
The 406 residents living in the three buildings were transferred to shelters provided by local government. They will get cash compensation and move back to their buildings when repair work finishes in Octorber.
