Buildings demolished after fire checks

Authorities in central China’s Henan Province have demolished or closed 2,012 prefabricated buildings deemed a major fire risk following a rest home blaze in the province on May 25 that cost 38 lives.

The provincial fire department said yesterday that it had carried out a comprehensive check after the tragedy and found modular structures used as makeshift buildings in hospitals, schools, kindergartens and community centers.

The steel panels used in their construction contained insulating materials inside that made them flammable.

The structures, which are easy to build, were in widespread use.

The privately-owned Kangleyuan nursing home in Henan’s Lushan County, site of the deadly blaze, consisted of a row of bungalows all made of such steel panels.

The blaze swept through the entire complex within an hour, leaving 38 of the 51 occupants dead and six injured.

An initial investigation found that poor build quality and lax safety management were to blame, the State Administration of Work Safety said previously.

During the subsequent safety checks in the province, the fire department oversaw the tearing down of 1,254 similarly constructed buildings and the shutting down of 758 other premises.
