Bulldozer crushes woman: official suspended
A NORTH China village official was suspended from his post after a woman was crushed to death by a bulldozer in a forced demolition, which the village authorities said was "only an accident."
Meng Jianfen was trying to stop the demolition crews from tearing her home down in Zhangjiaying village of Hebei Province when she was killed. Meng's mother Hu Xifeng drank pesticide in protest while her aunt Hu Qiaofeng was also severely hurt by the bulldozer.
Hu Xifeng is under treatment in a local hospital while Hu Qiaofeng is in a coma with a smashed leg and pelvic bone, China News Service reported today.
Police in Xingtai City have stepped into the case. The driver of the bulldozer, manager of the demolition project, and Zhangjiaying's Party boss Zhang Shengli were arrested.
The tragedy took place on Sunday when bulldozers and demolition crew surrounded nine villagers' houses. The crew's head said they were told to tear the homes down because they were "illegal constructions."
The village's police safety production authority refused to comment on the incident.
Protests against forced demolition have become more extreme since Tang Fuzhen, a Chengdu businesswoman, set herself on fire to stop bulldozers from tearing her home down.
Tang died after 16 days of agony and her home was still demolished. Chengdu city officials accused her of "violently resisting law enforcement" and justified their acts by saying her house was built illegally.
These controversial evictions have prompted China's law makers to draft a new demolition law that prohibits authorities from cutting off water and electricity and acting with violence.
