Bun stalls closed over additives

BEIJING authorities have closed four bogus chain food stalls after it was discovered that illegal food additives had been added to buns they were selling.

Owners and workers were gone when officials raided the stalls in Changping and Chaoyang districts following a media report that several illegal food additives were mixed in with the filling, the Beijing News reported yesterday.

Officials failed to find an additive called veltol, which is banned from food production, that was discovered in the bun filling in an earlier investigation by the Beijing newspaper.

The stalls claimed to be branches of Steam Kung Fu. However a manager of the chain, surnamed Cao, told the newspaper that out of around 200 Beijing outlets posing as Steam Kung Fu branches, only 26 were authentic.

Of the four food stalls that were closed, two didn't have business licenses. The business licenses the other two had did not permit them to sell food and beverages.

Changping authorities say they will launch a clampdown against illegal food additives.
