Bureau chief fired after death of vendor

THE head of a district's urban management bureau in southwest China's Guizhou Province has been sacked after a street vendor died in a dispute with city management officers, local authorities said yesterday.

In a statement, the Xixiu District Committee of the Communist Party of China in the city of Anshun said it had dismissed Li Jianguo from his post as head of the district's city management bureau.

An urban management officer was detained yesterday as police launched an investigation into the street vendor's death.

The detainee, Wang Sheng, is suspected of beating street vendor Deng Qiguo during a dispute, according to police investigators.

The beating might be linked to the man's death, they added.

Hundreds of protesters gathered on Zhonghuanan Street in downtown Anshun on Tuesday, accusing city management officers of beating the vendor.

Police said about 30 protestors and 10 policemen were injured during the protest.

Deng, a 52-year-old disabled man, was selling fruit near a marketplace entrance when urban management officers, including Wang, conducted checks for illegal street-side vending.

Investigators said the dispute started when Wang took away Deng's fruit cart and the vendor tried to stop him.

Police have yet to announce the results of Deng's autopsy - the cause of death is still unknown.

Protestors believe Deng was beaten to death, and say they are angry that the one-legged man was assaulted by urban management officers.
