Bureau ‘paid off vaccine families’
PARENTS of two children who died after receiving vaccinations and those of a third reported to be dying were paid by a health bureau in central China’s Henan Province not to petition Party officials.
Authorities in Shenqiu County say the deaths and serious illness following vaccinations were caused by disease.
But the health centers had problems with vaccines, China.com.cn reported yesterday.
A doctor from one health center was removed from the institution and banned from administering vaccines.
Its director has received a warning and a vice director was removed from his position due to breaches of regulations of storage, transportation and distribution of vaccines.
Zheng Hui, from Shenqiu County, took his three-month-old daughter to the local health center on July 10 for a DPT injection against diphtheria, whooping cough and tetanus.
But the child fell ill that evening and was diagnosed with bronchitis and encephalitis — inflammation of the brain caused by a virus.
She died a month later and her family received 150,000 yuan (US$24,385) last Tuesday.
Yang Wei brought his three-year-old son to a health center in Beiyangzhuang Village to receive a vaccine against Japanese encephalitis on May 31.
The boy fell into a coma shortly after and was diagnosed with encephalitis. The child died and the family received 300,000 yuan.
In the third case, the one-year-old daughter of Zhao Zhenfeng received an injection against Japanese encephalitis at Zhaodeying health center on May 9. Ever since she has been seriously ill and is said to be dying, reported China.com.cn.
According to the website, her family signed an agreement with the health center. They were paid 300,000 yuan to help cover treatment. In return, they were told to stop petitioning Party officials.
A director, surnamed Zhang, from the Shenqiu disease control and prevention center said all the health centers involved had problems in vaccination.
But he added that the deaths were caused by illnesses.
Families had petitioned local Party committees, and the Party committee in Shenqiu County asked Shenqiu Health Bureau to handle this as soon as possible, an official was quoted by Thepaper.cn.
