Bureaus grilled for abusing public fund

TWO government bureaus in Nanyang in central Henan Province are under fire for spending 480,000 yuan (US$ 72,294) from taxpayers to compensate the families of three people killed by a senior official in a road accident.

Yu Xiangjie, who was the chief of Xixia County Meteorological Bureau before the accident, knocked down three pedestrians including a two-year-old girl when he lost control of his car while driving his superior from the Nanyang City Meteorological Bureau to a dinosaur park on September 26.

Yu, who was bailed out due to his heart disease, has reached an agreement with the victims' families to pay a total of 630,000 yuan in compensation, local Dahe Daily reported today.

Yu paid 150,000 yuan by himself and the rest of the bill was paid off by the two weather bureaus.
