Burglar addicted to violent video games accused of slaughtering family of 6 in Guangzhou

A BURGLAR was so addicted to video games and violent scenes that it incited him to murder a family of six, said police as they revealed lurid details during a news conference yesterday in the southern city of Guangzhou.

Police said the 29-year-old suspect surnamed Su had become obsessed with online fighting and shooting games in recent years. As a casual laborer, he often lacked money to play games and he decided to steal.

They reported the following events: At 3am on April 28, Su entered a local apartment building and went to the rooftop on the 23rd floor. He climbed along the water pipe and broke into an unlocked unit one floor down, carrying a hammer, knife and rope.

The grandfather was the first to perceive the burglary and got into a fight with Su. The fierce brawl woke up the father who was sleeping in the next bedroom, and shocked his 5-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son. Su brutally killed all of them -- grandparents, parents and two children.

Su escaped with nearly 6,000 yuan (US$960) in cash, a gold bracelet and several bank cards, the Guangzhou Daily reported.

Police caught Su at his rental room at 5am on May 3 and seized the stolen goods. The money had already been spent on video games.

Su is being held as the investigation continues.
