Burglar stole to care for his sick mother
A BURGLAR who stole nearly 100,000 yuan (US$1,464.49) from more than 100 victims in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality over the past two years spent most of the money on caring for his sick mother.
Du Xiaofeng, a native of Sichuan Province who was a migrant worker in Chongqing, was arrested on Thursday by police in Chongqing's Daduhe District, yesterday's Chongqing Evening News reported.
Du said he had spent most of the money on medical bills for his mother who had developed uremia, an illness accompanying kidney failure. A police investigation confirmed Du's account.
Du's mother was diagnosed with the illness in early 2007. Du had visited her often since then, bringing her food and money.
He usually climbed into his victims' rooms late at night wearing a mask and spent no more than 10 minutes in each house before making a quick getaway on his motorcycle, police said.
Du had been sentenced to a year in jail in 2003 for burglary, they added.
