Bus blaze compensation

VICTIMS of the Chengdu bus blaze last Friday are being offered compensation packages of up to 420,000 yuan (US$61,448) by the bus company involved, a Chongqing-based newspaper reported yesterday.

The blaze on the No. 9 bus in the capital of Sichuan Province killed 27 people and injured 74 others.

Unidentified families told Chongqing Times that a team from the bus's operating company, Beixing Bus Co Ltd under the Chengdu Public Transport Group, has contacted them about compensation. The amounts varied but the highest package was worth 420,000 yuan.

The package was to cover compensation for death, mental anguish and living costs for the victims' dependants, one of the families told the newspaper.

Neither the Chengdu government nor the bus company has confirmed the report.

At least seven families have rejected offers, the newspaper said.

Those families said the minimum compensation for death should be 338,860 yuan - 86,200 yuan higher than the 252,660 yuan on offer, the newspaper reported.
