Bus company pays costs after crash

A SHANGHAI bus company yesterday paid 180,000 yuan (US$26,370) in total to the relatives of nine people who died in a traffic accident on Wednesday in southwest China's Guizhou Province.

The money is to cover their costs, including funerals.

An investigation into the accident is under way and four senior officials with the Shanghai Pudong Passenger Transport Bus Co have arrived in Dafang County of Bijie Prefecture in Guizhou.

Two infants where among 38 people injured when the bus crashed through a highway guard rail, the Shanghai Communications, Transport and Port Administration Bureau said.

No Shanghai citizens were on the bus, which belonged to the Shanghai company but had been contracted out to a Guizhou company.

There were three drivers on board, all Guizhou natives with more than 10 years of driving experience, a company manager said.

The bus left Shanghai on Monday at 1pm and the accident happened at about 5:35am on Wednesday.

Driver Ma Huanxun, 49, who escaped with minor injuries, said the icy conditions may have been to blame, according to yesterday's Xinmin Evening News.
