Bus crash official in death fall
AN official dispatched from Seoul to deal with the aftermath of a bus crash in China in which 10 South Koreans were killed was found dead early yesterday after falling from his hotel room, a local government said.
The official, named as Choi Doo-Yeong, was confirmed dead after police were notified that a man had fallen from a four-story hotel in the northeastern Chinese city of Ji’an, the city’s publicity department said.
The reason for the fall was under investigation, it said.
Choi fell from his hotel room at about 3am, said Guo Yuanqiang, vice head of the city’s public security bureau.
Guo said a police investigation had ruled out the possibility of foul play and inferred that Choi had committed suicide, Xinhua news agency reported.
Choi was president of the Local Government Officials’ Development Institute and arrived in China following the accident last Wednesday where a bus carrying 26 South Korean civil servants plunged from a bridge in Ji’an.
The Chinese driver was also killed in the crash.
The bodies of the victims were being flown to South Korea on a chartered flight today, local officials said.
Xinhua said Choi had accompanied Chung Chae-Gun, vice minister at South Korea’s Ministry of Government Administration and Home Affairs, to deal with the aftermath.
The crash victims had been traveling on a training program organized by the institute, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency said. “It has not been confirmed whether Choi jumped from the hotel to his death or lost his footing and fell,” an official at the South Korean ministry said, according to Yonhap.
Another government official quoted by Yonhap said that Choi “was known to have felt a heavy responsibility for the tragic accident as the head of the institute.”
The institute Choi headed is affiliated with the government, Yonhap added.
Ji’an is a popular destination for South Koreans visiting China as it hosts historical sites related to an ancient kingdom that occupied what is now the Korean Peninsula and northeast China.
