Bus crash survivors in critical condition

TWO people seriously burned in a fatal bus fire in central China’s Hunan Province on Sunday are in a critical condition, doctors said yesterday.

The incident happened at about 10:20am, when a bus carrying 57 people crashed into a highway guardrail in Yizhang County and burst into flames.

The blaze killed 35 people.

The identities of those who died are being verified, local authorities said. Blood samples are being collected from relatives to help identification.

Six seriously injured passengers are receiving treatment at the No. 1 People’s Hospital of Chenzhou while seven others who sustained minor injuries are in hospital in Yizhang, said Tao Cheng, a medical expert who participated in the rescue work.

One of the critically injured passengers is a diabetic in her 50s who sustained burns to 90 percent of her body. The other is a woman with burns to half her body, Tao said.

The other four seriously injured people are in a stable condition. They suffered fractures, trauma and inhalation injuries.

Tao said a 51-year-old man who was injured in the blaze told her the fire started at the back of the bus. He was sitting at the front of the vehicle and broke a window with a fire extinguisher to escape.
