Bus driver killed by flying metal honored for saving 24 lives

A broken piece of a vehicle's drum brake flew up in the air, hit an upcoming bus and killed the driver last Tuesday. In his last moment, the driver pulled the bus to the roadside and turned on hazard lights, thus saving 24 passengers from a potential crash.
The 48-year-old driver Wu Bin from Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang Province, struggled to stop the bus, turned on hazard lights, applied the parking brake and told passengers to remain seated before collapsing.
Wu succumbed to his wound on Friday despite rescue efforts. His heroic act moved many people and Hangzhou government has presented a 500,000-yuan (US$78,900) bravery award to his family, the local Modern Express reported today.
Police in Wuxi City of Jiangsu Province have identified 20 vehicles that passed the section of a highway between Wuxi and Hangzhou when the accident happened and are trying to pin down the suspect.
Initial investigation showed the shoddy drum brake broke due to metal fatigue and a broken piece was launched by the wheel into the air and smashed the windshield of Wu's bus. The tragedy was recorded by a surveillance video camera on the bus.
A drum brake is a brake in which the friction is caused by a set of shoes or pads that press against a rotating drum-shaped brake.
