Bus plunge death toll rises to 11

THE death toll has risen to 11 after an overloaded bus plunged into a ravine in Zhejiang Province on Wednesday, rescuers said yesterday.

Wang Shuiliang, vice mayor of Jiangshan City, who was overseeing the rescue work, said rescuers had found all 28 people aboard the 19-seat passenger bus, as they combed the ravine for survivors.

"Among the dead were six men and five women. One of the 17 injured is still in a critical condition in hospital," Wang said.

An investigation by police and work safety officials found the bus was rented from Jiangshan Dazhong Bus Co by a farmer so he could take relatives home from a funeral, Wang said.

Investigation officials said a driver error likely caused the accident.

The bus plunged 100 meters into a ravine off a mountain road in Qianling Village in Sidu Township of Jiangshan at 2:30pm on Wednesday.

More than 300 people, including police, soldiers, medical workers, officials and locals joined the rescue operation.
